University of Richmond

The Jewish studies program offers Richmond students the opportunity to pursue an interdisciplinary program that touches almost all areas of the liberal arts as it explores the history and culture of the Jewish people throughout the millennia.

The program offers a minor in Jewish studies. Some students choose to major in religion and minor in Jewish studies while others decide that the Jewish studies minor complements the work they are already doing in degree fields as varied as philosophy, English or art history.

The Jewish studies curriculum extends into a range of interdisciplinary fields. Students take courses in history, religion, political science, philosophy and the languages.

Students also can take advantage of additional resources in Richmond by taking courses through Virginia Commonwealth University’s Center for Judaic Studies. Research and other experiential learning opportunities are available for students who want to study particular areas of interest independently.

Students with a minor in Jewish studies have an understanding of the Middle East as it once was and as it is today. They understand the Jewish people as well as all people who have faced and continue to face persecution. Their knowledge and empathy make them successful in their careers or post-graduate work, regardless of whether they continue to study the Jewish faith and its people.

Jewish students and students interested in the Jewish faith may also be interested in joining Hillel at the University of Richmond.
